Expedition Doctors Wanted for Fulcrum, from Dr Polly Jacobs

Fulcrum is a charity which takes 16-18 year-old students from around the UK on a personal development programme. As part of this programme they take part in a 2-3 week expedition in Africa or India which is always accompanied by a doctor. These expeditions typically involve trekking across a desert or hiking in the Himalayas up to 17,000ft. After the expedition component of the challenge, the students are involved in a local community project such as building a school, well or greenhouse poly tunnel.

Any doctor interested should:
1. Preferably be over 28 years old
2. Have done at least 6-12 months of A&E
3. Have been on an approved Expedition & Wilderness Medicine Course
4. Have previously been to the intended altitude of the expedition or higher (for altitude expeditions only)
5. Enjoy the company of the 16-18 year-old age group and be interested in their learning.

Fulcrum is a truly brilliant organisation to be involved in and attracts a fantastic group of committed leaders and doctors. If you are interested please contact me, Dr Polly Jacobs with your CV pollyjacobs@hotmail.com.

Patagonia expeditions with Global Vision International

GVI is looking for a doctor to take part in our next expedition that starts in April and ends in July. It will be the first time that we have ran expeditions in Patagonia at this time of year and it will be dealing with very harsh winter conditions. The whole expedition involves scientific research and exploratory trekking in an approximate 50/50 split. We are currently monitoring Andean Condors and tracking wild boar in Argentina in an attempt to study their migrational patterns. There is also an element of the Expedition that is purely for fun and hence there's an Ice Cap Traverse in Chile.

GVI does not pay short term staff, but if a doctor was to become part of the team for a year they would have all expenses in-country paid, plus a weekly salary of US$100, plus a flight contribution of 500 GBP. They would have to have their own medical liability insurance.

Short term (3 month) staff have to pay their own flight and they get to take part in the expedition for free. All their in-country costs are covered too. Our web site is www.gvi.co.uk and the Patagonia pages start at http://www.gvi.co.uk/pages/expeditionDetail.asp?expedition=74
